I somewhat agree with the statement in the article that said “…social learning theory tends to
view children as lumps of clay that are modeled by their environment.” Don’t get me wrong, I
disagree with this type of education of parents on their kids, but I do agree that this type of
learning theory still exists in our society. They forced their kids to behave and grow up like the
way they think is right, and that somehow destroys the uniqueness of their own children. Media
socialization also affects the way we teach our children as well, for example that we can see all
the fairy tales are portrayed somewhat in the same type of genre, where the male supposed to
be strong and brave, the female will be portrayed as beautiful and kind. Media exposes youth
to consume those gender norms, that how media use shapes children’s and adolescents’
gender beliefs and assumptions. The article also presented some evidence that media use
contributes to traditional gender role attitudes, appearance beliefs and sexualization, like toy
and play behavior (cross-gender plays), and jobs aspirations, and that might affect children’s
academic performance as well.
Second friend resound:
While I was reading “Gender Socialization” the first point of this article that attracted my
attention was the positive and negative reaction of a father toward children based on their
gender. I observed and been in that type of condition in my childhood and some of that
reaction can cause unpredicted negative circumstances among children. A father should not
handle that type of condition by criticizing his son/daughter with anger emotion that may harm
their feeling. Instead, parents should spend time with their children to create a social
environment at home As mentioned in the article,” A young girl learns what it means to be
female by observing her mother, whereas a boy learns what it means to be male by observing
his father.” Meanwhile, In the “Parented as Socialization Agents” part of this article, I found out
that boys are more likely criticized than grills by teachers and fathers. From my perspective, I
think this statement is true which is unfair action toward boys that may create problems at
school or home among girls and boys. In terms of “Peer Group Socialization,” I agree with the
article that states “Boys and girls play very differently” from my observation girls prefer small
groups and consider each other with more respect. Boys like a large group and play
aggressively and do not consider each other with much respect that they should. A clear
example is going to a park where a bunch of girls and boys are playing with their peers. If you
pay deep attention to their activities you will find a lot of difference between girls and boys in
terms of peer-playing.
Third friend resound:
The first point that stood out to me was the positive and negative reinforcement between boys
and girls. From the Social Learning Theory, it’s prevalent how much parents or nearby peers
could influence a child that would affect their behavior as they grow up. For example, the article
stated how girls were stereotypically more comforted and nurtured when they were younger vs
boys who were told to “be a man”. This can suggest why the stereotype of girls “being more
emotional” rolls out and I personally find it interesting how the influence of the caregiver could
greatly affect a child’s behavior. Reading this session reminded me of the commercial “Inspired
Her Mind” a few weeks ago when a girl was interested in science and “masculine” activities, but
she was negatively reinforced to drop her dreams as she grew older. People who grew up in
very traditional cultures and backgrounds were often raised by this influence. To add, in
‘Parents as Socialization Agents’, it was stated how male and female infants are similar, but it is
the parents that dissociate their way of thinking due to their gender. Even before children were
born, there were things like gender reveal parties/baby showers where families give gifts to the
soon-to-be-born child. If the child was a girl, she would likely be gifted pink or feminine objects
like dolls, dresses, while boys would be gifted masculine objects like toy cars, pants, and shirts
as outfits, and other male-dominated toys. Another interesting thing that stood out to me was
how all of these theories/insights can be easily connected to one another. For example, peer
pressure socialization and the social learning theories both influence how a child is raised. But
the Gender Schema Theory introduces how a culture divides how a certain gender is supposed
to act, which influences parents socialization. Reading this article, I tried to find an umbrella
term that put all of these insights/theories under one category. It’s difficult since there are
many different layers where they’re all “jumbled” together rather than having point A causes
point B and point B causes point C. Children are influenced by parents, but also by their peers,
and in turn, it is a whole cycle of society following a typical way of thinking. If I really had to, I
would say culture plays one of the most pivotal points on a child’s behavior due to their gender.
The complexity of gender development in total is what stood out to me while reading this
