SOLUTION: Campbellsville University What Was the Focus of The Coursework This Week Questions

MEMORANDUM
STUDENT NAME: Sai Divya Kolakaluri
EMPLOYER: Cubic Transportation
SUPERVISOR: Walter Stavreff
WEEK DATES: (02/08/2021 to 02/14/2021)
Reflective summaries should be a maximum of one (1) page, typed and 1 1/2spaced, with Arial font, 1” margins, and 12 point. (Memo format). Full sentences
required.
Unless otherwise directed by faculty the summaries must address the topics below to
use as “headings” to divide each reflection topic within your summary.
What was the focus of the course work this week?
The focus of the course this week was on costing using Activity Based Costing (ABC)
model to solve accounting problems. One importance of costing is the ability to
determine monetary value of products during production. Cost accounting also
determines elements for every operating order through materials, indirect industrial
costs and wages. The week course also looks into comparing and contrasting ABC
Costing versus Absorption Costing as well as determining whichever will improve the
accuracy of product costs. While absorption costing assigns costs to individual units, the
ABC model focuses on company activities as a central cost then attempts to assign
indirect costs to units. Moreover, the ABC model is applicable in all business costs and
not just production related overhead.
What were the topics?
The topics discussed this week include defining cost types and relevance, analyzing
cost behavior, and recognizing cost impact on management. There are also impacts of
costs on different businesses, direct and indirect costs, product costs and total costs as
the main types of costs. For costing methods, the subtopics include process costing,
activity-based costing and job costing.

How does it relate to your work?i
The Activity based Costing (ABC) method applies in estimations and recovery in
software development and costs of implementation. Most software development
companies face these factors including:
o Inaccurate estimation of project resources
o Incorrect allocation of real resource costs to projects.
Often, inaccurate estimations experienced courtesy of frequent lack systematic
organizational procedures for learning from past estimation errors. The ABC model
often enables software development companies to track actual resource consumption
through development activity for each project so as to provide the basis for variance
analysis and estimated and actual costs. The result is that it facilitates learning that is
more specific to the context of the organization. Almost all software development
companies exploit one charge out rate with reference to the number of man-days that
every project consumes. When it happens, there is little recognition of the largely
different types of information technology (IT) resources available and vastly penalizes
the simple project that may potentially use relatively less skilled and therefore less
expensive development resources. Explicitly, the ABC model acknowledges different
resource pools and allocates various costs of development and implementation
activities.
NOTE: Directly apply concepts learned to work. If the concepts do not apply directly to
your current job, then you need to explain your understanding of how it “can be applied”
in your company.
