X., Jiang, Y., Xu, X., Spruyt, K., Zhu, Q., Tseng, C. H., & Jiang,F. (2018). A Community-Based Study of Sleep and Cognitive Development in Infants andToddlers. Journal of clinical sleep medicine : JCSM : official publication of the AmericanAcademy of Sleep Medicine, 14(6), 977–984. https://doi.org/10.5664/jcsm.7164Sun and his fellow researchers discovered little empirical evidence had been compiledregarding disruptive sleep cycles in children ages 2-30 months and their cognitive developmentlevels. It is their hypothesis that the disruption of a child’s sleep cycle will lead to cognitivedifficulties that could be measured with standardized testing such as the Mental DevelopmentIndex (MDI) and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-I). To test this hypothesis, they enlisted 16 hospitals that provided prenatal and post-natal care to enlist random children inthe study from a wide demographic. The caregivers were asked to use a Brief Infant SleepQuestionnaire (BISQ) to record the child’s awakenings, frequency, and duration. This data wasthen cross-referenced with cognitive test results to determine the effects of disrupted sleep. The utilization of standardized testing, (MDI and BSID-I), within groups of similar agedchildren is a real strength in this study, and administrative bias was also removed enhancingaccuracy. The caregivers’ participation and recording of the waking details is a possible fault inthe experiment, as data may not be recorded as accurately as possible being outside of a clinicalsetting and with variable external stimuli. The researchers found that children that experienced 0 or 1 disruptive awakenings pernight suffered cognitive deficiencies in their test results, as well as those having 3 or more eventsper night. However, children recorded to have 2 disruptions per evening scored consistentlyhigher than any of the other children in the study.Take a look and let me know what you think, good study btw…use this copy, I cleaned it …
