ABC Data Assignment
TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE = 35
1. Program and Classroom Description (3 points)
a. Briefly describe the program (i.e., school), and classroom. Include the age groups served, the
number of students and the number and role of support staff. Add anything else that makes the
program special.
2. Behavioral Hypotheses (12 points, 6 points each)
a. Provide behavioral hypotheses based on the ABC data for each child (2 total).
i. Follow the formula and examples described in lecture slides on Functional Behavioral
Assessments (FBAs).
ii. A behavioral hypothesis describes what generally happens with the target child, not a
specific instance of challenging behavior. Because you only completed a short
observation and might only have observed one instance of challenging behavior for each
child, you might have to make some of this up based on your best guess.
3. ABC Data Forms (20 points, 10 points each)
a. Collect ABC data on the challenging behavior of 2 students during your observation(s). You
must have at least 1 ABC data form for each student (2 total).
i. Complete the chart with a way to identify each child (use pseudonyms, not real names.)
ii. Fill out setting events, antecedent, behavior, consequence, and probable function on the
ABC data form.
1. Use language that is observable and measurable. Avoid making guesses at the
child’s intentions or feelings.
2. Your probable function must be supported by the ABCs.
iii. Provide at least one ABC data form for each child. Multiple per child are preferable in
establishing patterns of behavior; however, you may not witness multiple instances of
challenging behavior for each child during your observation.

Functional Behavioral Assessment Data: Sidney
Date: __2/7/17______
Time:___9:45am ___ Location:____Wildflower Classroom __
Student:___Sidney McDuff__________________ Observer:____Sophia Sanchez_______
Setting Events (what’s going on at the day/time? Is it raining? Is the child sleep deprived, sick? Is there a
substitute teacher?)
Sidney has only attended the center for one week. At drop off, Sidney’s mom was
observed telling the teacher that Sidney is just getting over a cold and did not sleep well the
previous night. The students had not eaten snack at the time of the incident.
Antecedent
During free playtime in the classroom, Sidney was playing with trains and building a train
track by himself when another child attempted to take his train, grabbing the toy and
beginning to take it off the track.
Challenging Behavior
Sidney bit the peer taking the train, grabbing his arm making contact with his teeth and the
peer’s skin on the peer’s right forearm. The bite and grabbing of the arm lasted
approximately 5 seconds.
Consequence/Social Reaction
The peer screamed, dropped the train during the bite, began to cry, and left the train area to
seek comfort from a teacher approximately 10 feet away. The teacher, busy helping other
students, directed the peer to find another activity. She remained with other students and
did not approach Sidney to say anything to him. As a result of the bite, no skin was
broken, but Sidney left visible bite marks and saliva on the peer’s forearm.
POSSIBLE FUNCTION (Attention / Access to Item or Activity / Escape, Avoid, Delay / Sensory)
Sidney engages in this behavior to obtain a tangible, in this case, the train that he prefers.
