Born in Tuckahoe (Maryland) as a slave,Douglass was an American political leader, social reformer, writer, and orator who possessedstrong leadership traits. Douglass went into the books of history as a courageous leader whofought fiercely against the institution of slavery in America. In his narrative, he reveals to us theexperiences he went through as a slave, how he transitioned from childhood witlessness to amature and reasonable adult, how he escaped from slavery, among other details. Reading throughhis narrative, we learn so many things about his personality and character traits. This discussesthe character traits of Frederick Douglass, the conflicts he faced in his life, and the nature of hisconflicts/antagonists (external or internal). The Character of Fredrick DouglassOne striking character trait of Fredrick Douglass is that he was a truthful and honestperson, even in the face of adversity or danger. Most of the people he was in slavery with learnedto go with the flow or give in to the pressures of slavery to save themselves. On his part,Douglass was unbending and forthright when it came to doing the right thing and telling thetruth, even in the face of danger. He did not compromise his moral principles or do what he knewin his heart to be wrong: “I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridiculeof others, rather than to be false, and incur my own abhorrence” (Douglass, 2016, np).Fredrick Douglass was also daring, stubborn, persistent, and courageous, and selfconfident. As he explains in his narrative, white men treacherously encouraged the slaves toescape so that they could catch them and claim rewards. He was daring because he made two3failed attempts to escape slavery before succeeding in the third one. It was perhaps his daringnature, stubbornness, and persistence that eventually saw his escape attempt succeed. If he hadgiven up in the first or the second attempts, then perhaps he may not have succeeded. Even aftersuccessfully freeing himself, we learn that Fredrick Douglass was a selfless and self-confidentperson because he made efforts to deliver others from the oppressions of their masters. In fact, hewrote his narrative in the hope that it would shed light on the effects of slavery in America andhasten the process of freeing or delivering of slaves: “Sincerely and earnestly hoping that thislittle book may do something toward throwing light on the American slave system, and hasteningthe glad day of deliverance to the millions of my brethren in bonds” (Douglass, 2016, np).Conflicts Faced by Frederick DouglassDouglass (2016) also narrates the many conflicts he faced in his narrative, which alsoserves as his autobiography. It is through these conflicts that the character traits discussed aboveare revealed. Additionally, it was the many conflicts he faced that motivated him to escape fromslavery and champion for the liberty of others. One of the conflicts Douglass had to deal withwas that he did not know his family. Douglass did not know his real parents because he knewabout his father were whispers, which he never confirmed: “The whisper that my master was myfather may or may not be true; and, true or false” (Douglass, 2016, np). Another importantconflict faced by Douglass was his desire to liberate himself from slavery, both mentally andphysically; he eventually overcame this conflict by fleeing or escaping to New York. Were his Antagonists Internal or External? The antagonists Douglass faced were both internal and external. For example, he knewin his heart that making an esca…
