SOLUTION: EN 102 West VU Effect Adhd Has on College Students Research Proposal

MP2 Prompt (Research Proposal)
English 102, Spring 2021
Grading: This assignment is worth 10% of the major projects grade
Assignment
Each student will write and produce a specific, original, unified persuasive and informative essay, in which you
propose your research paper topic, tell the audience your key argument (thesis) and research question(s),
offer at least three reasons why it is important, and discuss any potential problems with research, and how
you will do the research (methods). The essay should have a clear structure. You will need to demonstrate
your thoughts, using specific details and evidence to develop your points. Remember that your proposal
should provide three things: 1. Explain the problem (research questions and thesis); 2. Explain how you will
address the problem (methods/rhetorical strategies); 3. Talk about why a solution is important.
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop an effective research plan for your Researched
Argument (MP#4), considering context, research questions, research sources, timeline, and larger
implications. Another goal is to give you practice working with the research proposal as an academic genre.
Requirements
1. The proposal must be at least 900 words (a minimum of 3 full pages in length).
2. The essay must be well-structured, including introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion: The
introduction should grab the readers’ interest, provide concise/brief context to tell the readers what
they will be reading about, and frame a clear research question(s) and thesis statement. The body
paragraphs are where you discuss research methods, background information of your topic (be
concise and brief!), the importance of this topic, the sources, the rhetorical strategies you plan to use
in your Researched Argument (MP4), and more ideas (see JAC page 46). The body paragraphs are also
the sections in which you might troubleshoot the research project. Make sure your readers
understand how the methodology and sources that you choose to use are appropriate to your
research topic. In your conclusion, be sure to address the “So What?” of this research.
3. Use MLA format. Double space your essay in Times New Roman pt 12. 1 inch margins all around. Do
NOT write a separate title page. Use your header/footer feature.
4. Give your essay a precise, interesting title, and center your title on the page – see example in Easy
Writer (253).
5. Include a Works Cited page, a list of sources that you plan to use in your research project – start your
list on a separate page after the text of your draft.
6. You may use both the third person and first person in your research proposal.
To begin: read Week 5 Module, and carefully consider the ideas and questions from Join Academic Conversation
(see page 46) that address the following:
How are you using your current research?
• What do you expect your overarching thesis to be at this point (keeping in mind that you may still
develop it further)? This is your research hypothesis.
• How does your research question relate to local, personal, or larger social and cultural issues, or how
does it relate to your specific course assignment?
• What kinds of sources might be most useful to you, and where will you find them?
What additional research is needed?
• What are some related sub-questions that may need to be answered in order to explore your main
research question more fully?
Is it rhetorically sound? What is the relationship between writer, subject, and audience?
• Why is this topic important to you? Why is it important to others?

What groups of people would be interested in reading about your topic? For what audience will your
research paper be written?
• In which publications or types of publications could you envision scholarly writings about your
question appearing?
How will you structure your argument?
• What makes this a debatable or multi-side issue?
• Can you articulate your claims in a sentence or two?
• What are some counter-arguments you can see surfacing in opposition to your stance? How will you
counter specific oppositions?
MLA Documentation
Be sure to refer to Easy Writer (pages 124-167) for in-text citations and Works Cited page (the MLA format).
