Assignment
Write an essay that presents your chosen question or problem along with an artifact (article, essay, book, etc.)
that speaks to this topic. In doing so, consider the significance of your chosen artifact, how it achieves its
effects, what message(s) its author may be communicating, and any comparisons you can draw from this
source.
You will complete this assignment by developing the research question that you will spend the term exploring
and writing an essay that argues for why your chosen research question is worthy of pursuing. If you have
taken this class previously, you MUST choose a different research subject. It should also describe your
process of choosing your topic and how you developed it as a research question. The essay should address
1) why you think your research question is worth further investigation,
2) how you chose the topic, and
3) how you refined the topic into a research question.
Then present the source you have chosen and how it speaks to your research question.
Assignment Objectives
Students’ essays should
1) express a question or problem about a specific topic;
2) present relevant information from a source they identify; and
3) analyze the contributions of their identified source toward an answer or solution (though this need not
be conclusive).

Purpose
The main purpose of this assignment is to help you choose a topic. Another goal of this assignment is to have
you think about the way you have thought about your topic and research question and the choices you made
(that is, think metacognitively about the process) and write about the process you went through to choose your
research topic.

You will need to think about questions such as:
• Why are you interested in this topic?
• What do you know about it already?
• Why do you think your topic matters?
• Why do you think a reader would be interested in reading an essay on this topic?
• Do you think this topic will be easily researched?
• What do you think others have said already about this topic?
• What does your source say about the topic?
• Thinking about the value of your research question, who would be interested, and what bodies of
knowledge it is in dialogue with is very helpful for guiding your research later on.
Directions
1) Choose a topic. Pick something that you are interested in that would be suitable for academic research
and writing.
2) Use brainstorming activities discussed in the reading or completed in class to turn your topic into a
strong, researchable, debatable research question. In particular, the myth of the boring topic exercise will
be helpful for this. This question will be the basis of your research and later your research essay, so
please spend ample time refining your question, and take notes of your process. (Remember, good
questions are debatable, remain unsettled or currently being debated, not too big or too small, or a
question that a group of educated readers might come to multiple ways of answering.)
3) After choosing and refining a research question, write an essay that explains to your reader why you
think your research question is worth investigating and answering. Remember to outline, draft, and
revise. The essay should have
a. A focused introduction that states your research question
b. A thesis statement that explains succinctly why you think it is good. (For example, “My research
question is worth pursuing further because . . . )
c. A body that explains your interest in the topic, how you developed the question, and why you
think it is an important, significant question to investigate. You might narrate and explain the
process you went through or any difficulties you encountered in your brainstorming. You will
include an artifact (article, essay, book, etc.) that speaks to this topic. Dedicated research at this
time is not called for. Focus on what you already know, how your artifact relates, and what you
want to learn.
d. A focused conclusion. You might explain your next steps in the project, such as where you will
begin your research, or how you think you might answer it.
4) This essay should NOT
a. Begin answering the question
b. Report on deep research. You are at the beginning of a process; while you might research current
events to help you contextualize your topic and question, you should limit your time doing
research.
Rhetorical Situation
The audience for this essay is very practical: yourself, your peers, and your professor. Your purpose is to
discover and explain to readers your research question and the process behind it. Write for the appropriate
academic audience.

Because you will be quoting, paraphrase, and summarizing from a source, you will need to parenthetically cite
it when you use it in your essay and include an MLA works cited page with an entry for source. Please ask if
