IT 7003 Networking Essentials and Security
Topics in this course include networking hardware and software, switches and routers, and network
design technologies. Includes concepts of cyber security and security risks that affect computers and
networks and explores methods and security options available to successfully protect the IT
EMBA PROGRAM STUDENTS:
All assignments, discussions, activities, projects, and homework in this course are focused
around the student’s current employment. The central focus of this EMBA program is unlike
other MBA programs in that it is designed to provide students with opportunities to network
learning from multiple employment environments and perspectives. Students are expected
to compare and contrast personal and current work experiences with those of other students
in the course. Ottawa University considers this uniquely designed curriculum a perhaps oncein-a-lifetime opportunity for its students to internalize learning through practical application,
combining current real-time experiences with classroom theory, creative testing, analysis,
modeling, and research, while applying new concepts to the workplace to improve practice

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Describe networking components and devices, and their integration
2. Explain and Compare OSI Model and TCP/IP Suite
3. Evaluate and Explain network transmission, and internet transmission protocols such as DHCP,
DNS, TCP, UDP, RDP, etc. Describe network security fundamentals
4. Evaluate IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting
5. Explain and Demonstrate network security fundamentals, computer and system security risks
6. Explain and Demonstrate different security protocols, methods of control, and protection
(administrative vs technical)
7. Explain and Demonstrate security risks and methods to protect operating systems, networks
and cloud-based environments
8. Design, document, build, and manage a high quality, high availability, and secured virtual
