In development and zoning, families also have to bedefined for regulation and distribution of resources. For the purpose of the family map, a familyis a universal social institution – since it is found in all societies around the world – that hasmembers related by blood, legal contracts – such as marriage and adoption – and may share atypical residence.I am a 37-year-old African American woman originally from Florida. At the age of 5years, we moved to Savannah, Georgia. I am a protestant Christian with an upbringing in theSpiritual Baptist Pentecostal Church. Before moving out, my family was a nuclear family madeup of a mother, father, and three children. Currently, I live in Savannah, Georgia, in a singleperson household. However, I get to spend lots of time with my nuclear family on holidays andweekends.Predominant ThemesOne of the key themes that have run through my family generation for over threegenerations is obesity. My father has had long-standing obesity issues from a young age. In theU.S., obesity is a vital issue that is prevalent among children from minority groups (Augustine &Kimbro, 2013). This is a fact that is also true for my family. My sister also had obesity-relatedcomplications at around the age of 16 years. I have a nephew that has struggled with obesityfrom the age of 11 years. This is an issue with some other complications, especially mental well-UNDERSTANDING MY FAMILY MAP4being, with crucial implications on the self-esteem of the individual and difficulties relating tointegration with the social circle.Another critical aspect that has been predominant in the family is the spiritual inclinationto the Christian faith. For more than three generations, my family has been strong protestantfollowers. The Spiritual Baptist Pentecostal Church has been a critical facet of the family, withall members attending the church. One of my uncles is a minister in the church. Religiouspractices are a common occurrence with the family having regular meetings to hold familyprayers. The importance of religion is emphasized from a young age and is practised in variousways, including donations to religious activities and attending religious services.Cultural IdentityWhen my great grandparents immigrated to the U.S., there was little choice of theirethnic identity. Society generally forced Black immigrants to adopt the title of AfricanAmerican. Additionally, the high levels of discrimination have an essential inclination onmoving individuals to identify as African Americans as a critical way of easier assimilation intosociety. This is a crucial aspect that highlights Black immigrants as invisible immigrants due tolack of choice in racial profiling (Ogundipe, 2011). To this end, American society’s racial makeup has been vital in developing a critical cultural identity as African Americans.Religion is also a vital part of the family. The protestant Christian faith has beeninstrumental in developing some attitudes towards the cultural identity of the family. The socioeconomic class of the family has also shaped this identity. My family is mainly a middle-incomeclass family and, as such, faces key issues of intersectionality, having to deal with existinginequality in the society among African Americans while also having to manoeuvre the uniqueUNDERSTANDING MY FAMILY MAP5position as middle-income status in the community…
