I”ll be happy to fix anything :)1) Socialization is when one or more people learn social norms through socialinteraction. Socialization works on an individual and social level. Socializationteaches members the skills necessary to satisfy basic human needs and defendthemselves against danger. It also allows teaches members of society how to adhereto beliefs and values of their culture. Socialization is something that allows society tocontinue to exist.2) The looking glass self is a way to conceptualize how individuals gain a sense of self.It is the way we see ourselves reflected back from others. Charles Cooley came upwith this idea in 1902. He described three steps to this process: we imagine how welook to others, we imagine other people’s judgment of us, and we experience somekind of feeling about ourselves based on our perception of other people’s judgments. It helps to form our concept of self along with the feelings we develop as a result ofwhat we imagine other people see in us.3) Significant symbols are important in children because they significantly impact achild’s development. George Herbert Mead is the man who came up with the idea ofsymbolic interactionism. He believed that human development and the meanings weassign to everyday objects and events are social processes. These processes requirethe interaction of multiple individuals. Linguistic gestures such as words and facialexpressions are the most important means of symbolic communication.4) According to Mead, the “I” is the experience of a spontaneous, active, and creativepart of ourselves and is less socialized. The “me” is the experience of a norm-abiding,conforming part of ourselves, more socialized and reliant on others. They both formthe dual nature of the self, the self as both subject (“I”) and object (“me”). Thesecomponents are united to form a single self for us. Children learn this in the finalstage of development.5) Freud believed that the psychological makeup of the individual helps to create socialorder. At the same time, this makeup is constrained by society’s structures anddemands which causes the person to become discontent. He believed in the consciousand the subconscious and two main impulses, the eros (libido or life instinct), andThanatos (aggression or death instinct). He believed that in order to live successfullyin society, there must be socially acceptable ways of channeling these instincts.6) According to Freud, the Superego develops as a result of parental guidance in theform of rewards and punishments we receive as children. The Ego operates on thebasis of reason and helps to mediate and integrate the demands of the id and theSuperego. The Ego is encouraged and developed by the Superego to find morallyacceptable forms of behavior. The Superego is composed of the conscience and theego-ideal. The Id, Ego, and Superego all serve a different function and help to keepthe individual in a healthy state of balance.7) Cooley and Mead were both part of the Chicago school. They believed more insociety’s influence on development through different stages and steps related tosocietal influence. Freud believed development was more internal and based on theconscious and subconscious. Cooley believed that there was no sense of self withoutsociety and there needs to be a “looking-glass” image. Mead believed that languagewas the key to development. Freud believed that very few people reached the finalstage of maturity and that development was based more on one’s subconscious andconscious.8) Family is thought about as the most important agent of socialization because it is theoriginal group to which we belong. Family is where early emotional and social bondsare created and where language is learned. It’s also where we begin to internalize thenorms and values of our society. Most of this socialization takes place within thefamily. The family has the longest-lasting influence on the individual.9) My family has taught me how to behave and adhere to the norms of society. Oneexample is learning to clean up after myself. I learned from an early age it isimportant to keep things neat around the house and this norm has continued to myadulthood. Another example is learning how to be mature when confronted withsomething I disagree with. I learned from an early age that staying angry at somethingth…
