SOLUTION: UMD Discussion Ways Donald Trump Influenced Voters Brains Discussion & Response

In Chapter 2, page 28, Kenneth Allan explains that the rise of /critical Theory was
significantly influenced by the destructiveness of Nazism.
Culture was identified as a powerful force in the destruction taking place; notably, the
ideologies used to get the German people to invade, destroy other countries, set up
concentration camps, etc.
The U.S., under Donald Trump’s presidency, remind us that “We” are like the Germans and
all other humans: we can do terrible things because of culture.

Professor said:
When Senator McConnell first acquitted Donald Trump during the Impeachment, then,
excoriated him from the podium, I was “confused.”: what was his game? I knew this man hates
Trump and much of what he stands for–and his wife had resigned from Trump’s cabinet. That
he acquitted him was expected; but then badmouthing Trump seemed out of place. I needed to
find a reason for this duplicity. Then, it hit me: he’s playing both sides against the middle, as the
saying goes.
One obvious conclusion of this fact, for me, is that McConnell has contempt for the masses, but
knows that we are often so consumed by biases, ideologies, and “hidden dictators” that we can be
bamboozled. So, people who want to believe Trump guilty will look at his non-vote comments;
while the Trump supporters will only look at the acquittal.
It’s enough to almost make one lose faith in the species that Marx saw as “noble.”
My classmate 2:
The main way I saw how people’s actions and beliefs were controlled by “Trump Culture” was
when Trump supporters stormed the U.S Capitol building on January 6, 2021. Before the attack
on Capitol Hill, Donald Trump repeated false claims of voter fraud in one his speeches. Many of
his supporters who went into the U.S Capitol believed the election was stolen and interrupted the
Electoral College vote count to formalize Joe Biden’s victory. It is known that the “Trump
Culture” is a large spreader of misinformation and conspiracy theories. For instance, Trump
tweeted on Twitter that he won the 2020 election and that it was rigged against him. Election
disinformation has been pushed heavily by Trump and his allies which motivated his supporters
to storm the U.S Capitol.
It is important to know that culture is a tool used to figure out things and navigate society. The
people who were convinced by Donald Trump’s motives in 2016 have become alienated from
President Trump in 2020 because the citizens in this country have different ways of
understanding what is best for our society. The president convinced many of his supporters that
he lost unfairly due to his claims of voting fraud which is the “subjective culture”. Subjective
culture is a cultural group’s characteristic way of perceiving its social environment through their
attitudes, values, beliefs, and norms of behavior. Trump and his allies pushed false election fraud
claims throughout social media sites. In the end, Trump lost the 2020 U.S election and that fact
did not matter to his supporters who breached the capitol.

My classmate 2:
“Trump Culture” is American Culture and it has existed long before Trump came into
power. This “culture” became amplified during the Obama Administration which paved the
pathway to Trump’s facism. When Trump started campaigning for the 2016 elections many
notable republicans outright rebuffed the notion that Trump could actually win the election
giving his behavior and antics. Republicans like Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell
and so forth went from rebuking Trump to embracing “Trump Culture”. No longer was it country
before party, but party before country; The Republican became Trump’s party. What has become
synonymous with “Trump Culture” is notably red “Make America Great Again” hats. I remember
the first time I saw a person wearing one, I was 25 minutes outside of Philadelphia and was
befuddled at the sight of it. I had not realized the sheer impact that Trump had. I remember
moving from DE to southern MD and being shocked at the amount of Trump signs and
billboards. I had never seen anything like it and what was even more powerful was that Trump
wasn’t evening campaigning. These signs and memorabilia were becoming a part of his followers
The impact of “Trump’s Culture” wasn’t just memorabilia, Trump embraced white supremacist
groups such as the proud boys saying “standback and standby”. He called the white men
marching in Charlottesville, VA caring tiki torches “fine people”. He called groups such as antifascists and Black Lives Matter Movements thugs. Black bodies continued dropping not only
from Covid-19 but at the hands of the police. He denied the virus existed and praised the officers
who are supporters of his. The police who are supposed to be non-partisan would openly wear
Trump memorabilia and publicly endorse him, all the while enacting physical violence against
Trump and those around him made him into a demigod. Just recently, at the CPAC Convention a
gold statue of Trump was erected where followers marveled. Trump directly influenced an
attempted coup and terrorist attack and the Republican Party has still divided that they are
moving forward with him as their candidate and as their leader. The control that Trump has
incentivized his followers so much that believed that he won the election, they believed their
rights were being infringed upon, and they believed that the white race was in danger that they
were willing to spill blood. Trump culture doesn’t just control ordinary citizens but it also
controls the police force, the military, the courts and elected officials.
