1. Summary of the Articles
In the article ‘Barrett fight puts focus on abortion in the 2020 election’, the author says
that Judge Amy Barrett’s confirmation battle elevated the national debate over abortion rights to
a higher level. The article says that President Trump’s nominee indicated Roe vs Wade’s
skepticism when the Supreme Court was supposed to reassess several challenges to the groundbreaking case. California’s Senator, Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s first substantive question to the
nominee, was whether she concurred with the late Justice Antonin’s decision on Roe vs Wade
and his thoughts on whether the judgment ought to be overruled. Barrett, however, declined to
give her views on the matter (Bolton, 2020). Seventeen abortion-related cases were being heard
at the appellate court. For some specific audiences, such as the college-educated, it is useful to
link Roe vs Wade and the ‘Affordable Care Act’ since it entails reproductive healthcare and
women’s birth control.
In the 1990s, abortion remained a hot topic; however, the topic faded after that. The
fading was necessitated by the high court decision of establishing the right to abortion in the Roe
vs Wade case. However, in recent times, the abortion topic has faded because of affordable
healthcare, the Iraq War, and the coronavirus pandemic (Bolton, 2020). In the 2020 election runup, the abortion topic gained momentum because Supreme Court conservatives are destined to
gain a decisive majority of 6-3. Issues on abortion rights are particularly vital with high visibility
amongst suburban women identified by Mitch McConnell, the then-Senate Majority leader. The
article concludes by stating that abortion remains to be a charged concern cutting across both
ways. Abortion is a potential liability to suburban women from the Republican Party and the
Democratic Party or even the Catholic swing voters.
1. Related to the real-life situation on abortion
3
Abortion in the United States in 2013 was massively irregular. It varied by state, culture,
income, race, age, and family (Winter, 2013). Some people feel somewhat ashamed such that
they can never tell their family or friends. The same woman, at times, can wake up with many
regrets. In the spring of 2013, Nicole, of nineteen years of age in the State of Kentucky due date
was coming, and she wanted to keep the baby. Her boyfriend was a footballer and could not
accompany her to the doctor’s appointment. Nicole would have felt comfortable had her
boyfriend accompanied. She aborted her baby while she was paged for thirteen weeks. Her
boyfriend encouraged her to divorce the baby as much as he failed to be responsible (Winter,
2013). One month after the procedure, Nicole always cried about the whole scenario, and she
regretted having gone for an abortion. Besides, she has never heard of any of her friends going
for an abortion, and hence she remained traumatized.
Abortions should only be permitted only when the health of the month is compromised.
Nicole remained traumatized about the whole procedure long after it happened, yet her
boyfriend, who had earlier encouraged her to go for the procedure, was nowhere close to her to
console her.
1. Related to the field of Study
My current major is general studies; however, for this assignment, my chosen topic is
abortion. In general studies, one builds a broad-based education, and it is not easy to learn the
skills needed for a specific job task. General studies encompass all prospects of the universe
around us, including issues of abortion that are broadly discussed in this essay. Generally, it can
be concluded that the initiative on the outcomes and determinants of induced abortion show
some substantial patterns. For instance, induced abortion can be carried out in both adolescents
and married women (Carlsson et al., 2018). General studies also establish that some abortion
4
seekers, especially adolescents, use modern contraceptives at the onset of pregnancies. Increased
usage of traditional methods in some nations results in abortion because women fail in following
proper instructions regarding safe periods.
1. Questions that Remain
1) How can abortion be safely done without compromising the health of the mother?
2) How would the governments prosecute the perpetrators who carry out unsafe
abortions on adolescent girls?
3) What are the possibilities of hospitals providing post-counselling to women who
carry out abortions and possibly advise them not to carry out the procedure if their
healthcare is not compromised and educate them on abortion consequences?

Bayefsky, M. J., Bartz, D., & Watson, K. L. (2020). Abortion during the Covid-19 pandemic—
ensuring access to an essential health service. New England Journal of Medicine, 382(19), e47.
This article by Bayefsky starts by presenting one of the worrying trends that can have an
immense effect on healthcare provisions that almost close to 1 million American women
populations undergo abortions every year at one point or the other. Owing to an increased level
of abortion cases, especially among younger teenage ladies and even older women, it has become
evident that putting a lot of legislation and punishments on those who undertake abortion is not
helpful at all. Thus, instead of instilling core rules, most states have started to develop other
measures aimed at increasing access to safe abortion and healthcare. When special insight is not
offered on care, the mortality rate would likely rise drastically. Thus, to solve this problem,
abortion is an essential service during the Covid-19 pandemics. This journal article is useful in
my project when assessing potential remedies and recommendations to solve this serious health
issue.

This research article by Dr. Bolton postulates more information on what sought of arguments
have been undertaken regarding safe abortion and human life well-being are at stake. The
article’s title was related to the intensification of the abortion case as a major political battle
between the democrats and independents. It presents various cases that are abortion-related,
some of which are at the appellate courts pending determination. The abortion debate has been
on many tongues for quite a long period. Policymakers and legislators, human right activist, and
religious leaders all have come up with their views on whether abortion should be legalized or
abandoned altogether. Indeed, all these arguments all converge on two critical decisions; right
and wrong. One of the most fundamental pieces of information from across revolves around the
choice and health as core determinants if or not abortion should be carried on a patient. One of
the key arguments presented is that as long as the patient undertaking abortion is ok with it, it is
good and well to go. Moreover, the article ends by stating that most women are opposed to
overturning Roe V. Wade’s rule. This article will be useful when evaluating possible court
rulings concerning abortion.
Carlsson, I., Breding, K., & Larsson, P. G. (2018). Complications related to induced abortion: a
combined retrospective and longitudinal follow-up study. BMC women’s health, 18(1), 1-9.
This Journal article by Carlson tries to evaluate the impact of abortion and its relationships to a
woman’s health status. Moreover, in this article dubbed “complications related to indentured
abortions, Dr. Carlson maintains that several abortions are available, but the most common type
is the induced abortions. Despite being common, most people are misled on taking this induced
method as they are not yet aware of its implications to overall health. Thus, this research work’s
major point was to provide more information about possible risk factors that might factor out in
the decision-making on whether to perform the abortion or desist from taking it at all cost.
3
Moreover, it also provided an overview of medical surgical procedures and their related effects.
Some of the identified health complications involved bleedings, infections, and incomplete
abortions. Lastly, this scholarly source outlined the impact of bacteria screening to prevent post
about infections. Thus, this resource is useful when evaluating the side effects of abortion on
human health.
Winter, M. (2013). 26 Women Share Their Abortion Stories — New York Magazine – Nymag.
Retrieved 25 January 2021, from https://nymag.com/news/features/abortion-stories-2013-11/.
This article by Winter M in the research work titled 26 women who share their abortion stories
presents a fundamental real-life scenario of women who have come out to share their true-life
stories about their experiences with abortion and its related complications. It is possible to collect
primary data through interviewing these women, which is useful when doing claim justifications.
Apart from providing information about possible information derived from the victims
interviewed’ personal testimonies, this article further addressed the case battle on abortion
whether it is ok to proceed with abortion or not applicable.
Similarly, a possible review of key legislation passed as a guide to abortion is also outlined
thereof. For instance, it also affirmed that decision to take abortion is personally related as long
as they have met key legal considerations like not doing abortion after 12 weeks as for Arkansas
and only to be performed by registered nurses as the case of California legislation. This article
will be applicable as secondary data since it provides states specific legislation that governs
abortion cases.
